Boxing takes place Mondays and Thursdays. See Activities list for times. This is run by a very experienced father and son team – Robert and Stephen Kipps. Both have been working at the Club for over thirty years.
Their aim is to encourage our members to take up boxing initially as a training and fitness activity and at their discretion will enter a promising candidate into appropriate bouts.
They have had their successes.
Ian Napa, who fought against Peter Culshaw for the WBU Flyweight championship of the World. He also won the National Light Flyweight ABA Title in 1997.
Jason Mathews won the WBO World Middleweight Championship in 1999 and the National Middleweight ABA Title in 1995 and was London Champion 5 times at this weight. Both boxers have represented England.
Mathew Chanda has won National Class A and B Novice titles at Featherweight
Shotokan Karate Academy is run by a husband and wife team Frances and Bill Gow on Wednesdays and Fridays 7.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
Instruct
to the 6th and 4th Dan Black Belt Standard.
All instructors have CRB checks and are registered with the Toyakwai Karate Association
and the English Karate Federation.
Kelly Cooney who became a World Champion is one of the group’s successes.
Michael Watson, another champion boxer, who despite immense problems incurred in a fight, went on to complete a Marathon. A wonderful
achievement.
Matthew Chanda, a young boxer who became National Novice Champion.
The Club is affiliated to the Amateur Boxing
Association. Bob and Steve both hold qualifications from that body.
